I’ve always thought that some of the worst people in the world have gotten to that terrible place not through just deciding to be evil and taking one huge leap into the realm of evil-doing. It’s so often an accumulation of small steps in the wrong direction. And each step in itself feels, okay, well you justify it or you rationalize, and then you suddenly wake up one day and look back and think, “Oh, Christ. ” And that’s sort of how I’ve always felt about her character. If you watch her in the first couple of episodes, she hardly says a word. And I think early on she participated in various petty crimes that Jeremy was committing, and quite enthusiastically.

Among the victims were his adoptive parents, June and Neville, his sister Sheila Caffell, and her six-year-old twin sons, Daniel and Nicholas. The case went to trial on October 3, 1986, and Jeremy was found guilty on all five counts of murder on October 28. He was initially given a 25-year-long sentence, but in 1994, then-UK Home Secretary Michael Howard wrote to him to tell him that he would never get out of jail. Despite this, Jeremy continues to maintain the claims of his innocence even today and has made several appeals through his lawyers to the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC).

At the time, Sheila — a model who went by the professional name of “Bambi” — had just been diagnosed with schizophrenia, and police believed she’d murdered her entire family before turning the gun on herself. It was Sheila's adopted brother, Jeremy Bamber (played by Freddie Fox), who first called the police to the farm. Jeremy Bamber was convicted and sentenced to life in prison more than 35 years ago for the infamous White House Farm murders in Essex, in which he killed his adoptive parents, his sister and her children. On August 7, 1985, Jeremy Bamber called the police to inform them that his entire family — his father, Nevill; his mother, June; his sister, Sheila; and Sheila’s six-year-old twin boys — were shot to death at the White House Farm.

That really intrigued me, that perhaps this show wouldn’t be like most dramatized crime shows, where at the end there’s a straightforward, simple answer. When questioning the Bambers' son, Jeremy Bamber, he claims that his sister, Sheila, who was suffering from schizophrenia, went "berserk", got hold of a silenced rifle and killed their parents and Sheila's six-year old twin sons. As the murder case unravels, a devastating twist comes to light. Five members of the Bamber-Caffell family are shot to death at White House Farm, Essex. The police, led by detectives DCI Taff Jones (Stephen Graham) and DS Stan Jones (Mark Addy), are called in to investigate. He and his girlfriend were house hunting and had stopped to take pictures of a place, police said.

In two of the killings, men with lengthy criminal records and a history of being unhoused have been charged with murder in what were apparently unprovoked attacks. Shawn Laval Smith is charged with stabbing to death 24-year-old Brianna Kupfer on Jan. 13 at the Hancock Park furniture store where she worked, and Kerry Bell is accused of killing nurse Sandra Shells as she waited for a bus outside Union Station that same day. "Today in your life you know people that weren't murdered because of the work that these detectives accomplished," he said.

I mean, Jeremy is in a maximum security prison still, and I assume he’s able to watch an ITV TV show one way or another, so I would be astonished if he hadn’t. I hope that the show does act as a critique of the institutional culture where dissenting voices or whistleblowers or the little person can so easily be crushed and not listened to, and sadly that’s still a problem in the world today. I think our show is as relevant in speaking to that as anything set now would be. Hours later when armed officers broke into White House Farm they found 61-year-old Nevill shot eight times and beaten. Upstairs Nicholas and Daniel were found dead in their beds while June and Sheila's bodies were in the master bedroom. His former brother-in-law Colin Caffell, Sheila's ex-husband and father of murdered Nicholas and Daniel, six, said Bamber was "charismatic" and "charming".
